In 2005, Hurricane Wilma severely damaged the reefs of Isla Mujeres, prompting the creation of the Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA) as an artificial reef. This initiative by Dr. Jaime and Roberto Diaz Abraham aimed to help natural reefs recover while minimizing diver impact and drawing tourists away from damaged areas, as Cancun and Isla receive over 850,000 visitors annually. Unlike traditional artificial reefs, MUSA features sculptures designed to integrate with the environment.

Dr. Jaime discovered underwater sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, who created his first four statues in November 2009. The project, titled "The Silent Evolution," was opened on November 27, 2010, and involved crafting statues free from harmful chemicals. Over 18 months, Taylor installed more than 450 figures underwater to encourage coral attachment. Made from pH-neutral marine concrete, these sculptures support reef growth and attract coral larvae. The museum attracted over 100,000 visitors that year.

Additionally, the statues are strategically oriented to face hurricane paths to minimize damage. In the case of the Silent Evolution, it is also protected by the Manchones reef system in the case of a tropical storm. Their deployment was timed to align with lunar coral spawning, enhancing coral recruitment and reducing algae growth.
