During nighttime, what you can see is limited to what your dive light illuminates. This means you must slow down and focus more on your immediate surroundings. Night dives typically begin at dusk and gradually transition into night. Nocturnal creatures usually hide in the reef or under rocks during the day and come out to feed. Corals open up to catch plankton, basket stars spread their arms wide, and octopuses go on a hunt. Lobsters also leave their cover while turtles sleep under the reef. Parrotfish often cover themselves in mucus for protection—additionally, the eyes of the red-eyed night shrimp sparkle in the reef. Not only do divers get to see more marine life, but the colors of the reef are also more vibrant when illuminated by a diver's light. When you turn off your light, the moon and stars on a clear Caribbean evening reveal how much you can still see. Another exciting factor that night diving offers is the bioluminescence created by certain types of plankton. When your light is off, moving your hand through the water causes the plankton to emit light, creating a trail of stars in the water.

Drift diving is a popular activity in this area, allowing you to move through the water without using your fins, giving you a sensation of flying.
