COURSE DETAILS:
Starting your journey to become a PADI Basic Mermaid Instructor is an exciting first step toward achieving your dream of becoming a full-fledged PADI Mermaid Instructor! To qualify as a PADI Basic Mermaid Instructor, allowing you to conduct the PADI Discover Mermaid experience and teach the PADI Basic Mermaid course, you must meet the following certification and training requirements.
Perform a 10-minute tread, drown-proof, bob or float using no aids and wearing only a swimsuit. Exception: A candidate with a physical impairment that makes it difficult/impossible to hold hands out of the water is exempted from that portion of the exercise.
Swim 800 metres/yards face down, using mask, snorkel and fins, nonstop without flotation aids. A candidate with leg-use limitations who normally arm-swims may use arms.
Swim 400 metres/yards nonstop, without swimming aids and using any stroke or combination of strokes.
Tow (or push) a diver for 100 metres/yards nonstop, at the surface, without assistance using monofin (mermaid tail).Â
Demonstrate the rescue of an unresponsive, nonbreathing mermaid diver at the surface and tow the victim for at least 50 metres/yards using monofin
Assist a current, Teaching status Mermaid Instructor or Instructor Trainer with at least one Discover Mermaid program and two Basic Mermaid courses/Mermaid course Confined Water Session 1s.
Certified as a PADI Advanced Mermaid (or have a qualifying certification)Â
Completed EFR Primary and Secondary Care training (or have a qualifying certification) within the last 24 monthsÂ
Current medical statement signed by a physician within the previous 12 months
Complete the knowledge development sections of the Mermaid Instructor Course, and the Mermaid Instructor Exam with a passing score of at least 75 percent.
Equipment
In the PADI Basic Mermaid Instructor course, you will use a monofin (i.e., mermaid tail), mask, snorkel, and fins. You may also use a wetsuit and weight belt. Using gear designed specifically for mermaiding is best for this level; however, you may be able to use snorkeling equipment you already own. If you are a freediver, some of your gear (e.g., mask, fins, and snorkel) is also suitable for mermaiding.

Notebook
If you bring your own mermaid tail it must be from one of the following brands:Â
Mermaid Linden, Suntails, Mertailor Whimsy, Fin Fun, or Cape Cali.Â
Mermaid Linden is highly recommended for beginners.
All courses require the completion of the following forms before participating:
1. PADI Medical Form
2. Assumption of Liability Form
3. Safe Mermaid Practices Statement of Understanding Form
